With schools closed to many pupils across the UK, the BBC is launching a schedule of educational programmes for television and online services to help parents, teachers and pupils.
Experts who are helping include footballer Marcus Rashford, chef Heston Blumenthal and physicist Brian Cox.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Professor Cox said the programmes were “exciting, entertaining and educational” and said the aim was to reach children who do not have access to broadband or laptops.
“These lessons are curated by experts, teachers and educationalists. This is not just putting your children in front of the television to keep them quiet,” he said.
BBC Director-General Tim Davie says by putting programmes on television as well as online, the aim is to reach the 1.7 million children who do not have access to laptops or computers.
He adds the organisation has teamed up with internet provider BT, which has agreed not to charge for data to access BBC Bitesize services.
