The long term forecast throws the potential second summer heat wave into doubt

A crushing update about a potential heatwave in early August has been issued by the Met Office.
A previous long term forecast from the weather service that predicted “warmer and drier-than-average conditions” returning to much of the UK in early August now looks to be delayed.
The Met Office previously said warmer conditions would return from August 2 to August 16, however it now looks like any long spells of sunshine will come later in the month, reports BirminghamLive.

Wales basked in its highest temperature of the year so far on Thursday with 31.2C in Gogerddan.
The long range weather forecast for July 28 to Friday, August 6, says: “Remaining unsettled through much of this period, with most places seeing showers or rain at times. Heavy and persistent rain is likely across northern Scotland on Wednesday and the rest of the UK could well see showers develop though the day, possibly thundery at times.
“Conditions remain changeable with outbreaks of rain moving in from the west, and further thundery showers possible between any drier interludes. Stronger that average winds are expected for the time of year. From the end of next week until early August, we will likely see mixed conditions with sunny spells and heavy showers, perhaps with some more prolonged rain at times. Southwestern areas possibly staying driest whereas the northeast could be wetter than usual. Average temperatures are expected.”

The Met Office says mixed conditions will likely remain for a few more days from August 6, with no dominant weather type and “sunny spells likely to be interspersed with showers or longer periods of rain”.
But there is good news after that, with the long term forecast saying: “As we head further towards mid-August, it is most likely to become more settled with drier and warmer conditions developing.
“Although confidence in the detail is low, there are tentative signals suggesting that high pressure may become more dominant during the middle of August, bringing more settled, drier and warmer conditions for many. There could still be a risk of showers or thunderstorms at times. Temperatures are most likely to be above average.”
However, as with all long range forecasts, confidence become lower towards longer timescales.
