The victim was initially found with “serious injuries” in the apartment complex before he was rushed to St James’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The man who was found dead has been named locally as Isaac ‘Ike’ Horgan.
This morning, a man ,40s, and woman, 30s, were both arrested in connection to Horgan’s death.
The two are currently being detained at Pearse Street Garda Station.
A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaà investigating the death of a man in his 50s, following an incident at Markievicz House yesterday have arrested two people.
“A man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s were both arrested this morning and are currently detained under the provision of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Pearse Street Garda station.”
Horgan was cleared of manslaughter of another man in 2005 and is well known in the area.
Gardai in Pearse Street suspect he may have been stabbed once.
A post mortem is due to be held today to determine the course of the investigation.
Gardai are trying to establish if anyone else was in his property before he was found.
A source said: “There was a lot of blood in the apartment but it’s not clear if the man was the victim of a crime.
“The post mortem will determine how his injury was caused.
“Anyone with information on his movements has been asked to come forward.”
This is absolutely tragic news, sadly once again the spectre of knife crime darkens our city’s streets and another life has been taken.”

Fine Gael TD Neale Richmond told The Irish Sun: This is absolutely tragic news, sadly once again the spectre of knife crime darkens our city’s streets and another life has been taken.
This problem is escalating with increases in seizures, hospitalisation and indeed deaths.
We need to fast tack plans for Scottish style early intervention, for weapons amnesties & to increase Garda visibility.
Strong sentences are important but that will never bring back a lost loved one, sentencing as a deterrent will only address a small aspect of the plague of knife crime.
A Garda spokesman said: “A male in his 50s was brought to St James Hospital and was later pronounced dead.
“A post mortem is due to take place, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation.
“The scene continues to be preserved and examinations are ongoing by the Garda Technical Bureau and Divisional Scenes of Crime personnel.”
