Steinhoff’s former chairperson says the complexity of the fraud said to have taken place at the retailer makes it is understandable that SA prosecutors have not yet finished their investigation.

Former Steinhoff chairperson Christo Wiese says it’s unfair to criticise South African prosecutors for not bringing charges against anyone in the investigation into the retail conglomerate, because of the complexity of the fraud allegations.
Wiese was speaking a day after German authorities announced that three former Steinhoff executives had been charged with balance sheet fraud which allegedly took place between July 2011 and January 2015.
The German probe into Steinhoff is separate from an ongoing Hawks investigation into alleged fraud and money laundering at the group.
