Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney is in Iran where he has met the country’s President Hassan Rouhani.
Afterwards the minister said: “The meeting went very well. I outlined the opportunity now to recommit to the JCPOA, but I emphasised the need for a willingness to engage with the new US administration on the steps necessary.”
He is also expected to meet in the next few hours the Islamic Republic’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
On Friday night Mr Zarif  indicated on Twitter that Iran will soon present a “constructive” plan of action, with European sources suggesting there were positive signs that Tehran could open informal talks about its nuclear programme.
As part of its membership of the UN Security Council this year, Ireland has been appointed as a Facilitator of a UN Resolution that urges the full implementation of the nuclear deal.
Minister Coveney said in a statement ahead of the trip that Ireland is keen to maintain a close dialogue with all actors, and encourages all parties to return to full compliance with the 2015 nuclear agreement.
